Cosplay Contest Rules 2024

The following rules apply to ALL entrants regardless of divisions.
Entry into the event is at the discretion of the event staff, and we reserve the right to reject ANY entrant who does not adhere to these rules or whose costume is in violation of them.

Costuming, Props and Dress Code

  • Footwear is required (do not come barefoot).
  • Costumes that are deemed to be indecently revealing (the “no costume is not a costume” principle), as well as costumes or props that are deemed to be offensive or otherwise unacceptable by Fandom Events standards are prohibited. An attendee who is wearing a costume or carrying a prop that does not meet these requirements may be asked to change into either street clothes or another costume.
  • No intentional or unintentional “wardrobe malfunctions” are allowed. Please make sure your costume is sturdily constructed; this includes proper undergarments. Men are encouraged to wear "dance belts" under tight-fitting "Super Hero" Cosplays.
  • All large props or any props resembling weapons (including guns, swords, spears, whips, bows, etc.) must pass through weapons check and be verified and peace-bonded by the event staff to ensure they are safe before the contest. Failure to do so may result in expulsion from the show. Please refer to our Weapons Policy for more detail.
  • All military, law enforcement, and other emergency service costumes should be easily distinguishable from official uniforms.
  • Hate symbols, even historical hate symbols like swastikas, will not be tolerated at Crossroads Fandom Fest.

  • Contestants must have altered or constructed more than 50% of their own costume. Modifications will be carefully assessed by our judges. Store-bought costumes are NOT PERMITTED! Your costume needs to be made or modified by you. We obviously will not judge you by store bought shoes.
  • Designs worn by anyone other than the maker of the costume is not allowed. The maker and wearer of the costume must be present and registered to enter.
  • Cosplay staff and judges may disqualify any entrant at any time for not meeting craftsmanship requirements.
  • Our judges may ask you to verify that your costume is an original construction or to confirm an acceptable amount of modifications have been made to pre-existing materials.
  • While we do allow for a few minor pre-made, pre-purchased items, we are looking for craftsmanship and creativity. You may also give credit to your fellow costumer(s) who assisted you during the construction of your entry. Any assistance can only be up to 30% assistance, for example, you may have purchased a 3D printed prop as opposed to modeling and printing it yourself but you may have finished the piece off yourself depending on the scale and amount of said 3D purchased piece. Or perhaps you’re too young to operate a certain type of machinery or tool. Again assessment of this will be at the full discretion of the judges.
  • Original character designs and concepts are accepted as well! We are also allowing mashups and different takes on existing characters. Please be prepared to show the judges your reference for all characters not cannon to their original intellectual property.
  • Note: Unfortunately, we will not have any repair kits on hand. You are responsible for your own costume and its integrity.

Prohibited Items:

  • Please refer to the official show Weapon Policy HERE
  • If you are not willing to comply with these policies, please do not bring your costume weapons.

  • Judging will be done based on the registration of each cosplay the week leading up to the contest. Keep that into consideration when submitting photos and/or videos of your cosplay. Final winners will be chosen the day of the contest in person. YOU MUST BE PRESENT THE DAY OF THE CONTEST TO WIN. If you are not present, you forfeit your entry into the competition.
Costume Presentation:
  • Anticipate a 30 second showcase presentation. Depending on the complexity and detail, the judges may request additional time to observe and properly judge your costume during the actual show.
Live Animals:
  • Live animals are not allowed during the show or pre-judging unless they are a service animal. No animal is allowed on the stage at any time. Our staff is on hand to assist you during the main stage event.
Kid-Friendly Show Reminder:
  • There will be children present and costumes and presentation should be suitable for ALL ages. As a reminder entry into the event is at the discretion of the event staff, and we reserve the right to reject ANY entrant who does not adhere to the rules or whose costume is in violation of them.
